A belt-like unique birthday card is a cool card to create for someone who loves to make a fashion statement.
But what’s so unique about this card, you might ask? One of its features that make an everyday greeting card is changed. In this case, it has a leather-like textured material instead of ordinary card stock paper. Hence, that’s its unique nature. You can find this kind of material in craft stores.
By the way, a belt-looking card is not the only option for expressing fashion on a greeting card. A diva purse-like birthday card works great too. What others can you think of?
A couple ways to apply the greeting card art into the birthday message include:
For your big day,
Here's one belt
You never have to unbuckle
Have a wonderful birthday
Plus:
Buckle up
For the birthday celebration
Of your life!
Enjoy your day!!!
12" x 12" purple leather like material or paper available in craft stores
8.5" x 11" purple cardstock paper
5” x 8.5” metallic gold cardstock paper
Thick white dimensional (3D) lettering stickers
Drawing pencil
Eraser
Circle template
Scissors
Metal ruler
Scoring stick
Cutting mat
Craft cutting knife
Glue
Glue the purple leather material onto the purple cardstock paper. This skeletal card stock support adds rigidity to the leather material.
Cut this into a 5.5” x 11” piece.
Score and fold this piece into a 5.5” x 5.5” card.
Cut out ¾” x 5.5” strip from the top and bottom of the card cover only.
Draw and cut out three 0.5” holes. The center of the first hole is 1-⅛” from the left folded edge. The centers of all the circles are 1-⅛” apart. Hence, the last hole is 2-1/8" from the non-folded edge.
Cut out a 5” x 5.5” rectangle from the gold metallic cardstock paper. Save the remaining piece for the buckle pin.
Use the circle template to draw 1-1/4” diameter curves on the four corners of the paper.
Draw two 1-¾” x 4.5” rectangles on the left and right of the gold metallic cardstock. Then use the circle template to round off all the corners with1/4” diameter curves. This leaves 0.5” margin all the way round.
Cut out the outside corners and the inside windows. This creates the belt buckle for the unique birthday card.
If you don’t have any other need for the cut out shapes, then save time by creating a slit to fit a scissors and use that to cut out the window.
Slide the just created belt buckle into the card cover and glue it in place right in the center. This leaves a ¼” margin on the left and right and ¾” margin on the top and bottom. Remember, the center buckle piece slides behind the card cover just like a real belt.
Use the opening on the buckle to trace and cut out the same holes on the bottom sheet to create the see through slits.
Use the 3D letter stickers to create “Happy Birthday” on the card.
Want to align the 3D text? Try using a ruler.
This way you don't have to worry about cleaning any pencil marks.
Use the left over gold metallic piece to cut out a ¼” x 3” strip with ¼” diameter curved ends for the buckle pin.
Finally, glue this pin on the unique birthday card through the first hole just like a real belt.
Purple is not the only color for textured leather greeting card supplies.
You can find all sorts of colors and sizes in the craft stores.
As mentioned earlier, a belt-like card is not the only way to uniquely apply leather to your project.
Another example is a birthday greeting card that looks like a purse. What else comes to mind?
